For the past few days, one thing has been going viral on Instagram and YouTube Shorts — “Claude Code is completely FREE, the $200 Max plan free for 6 months!” And everyone has the same question: “Is this true, or just more clickbait?”
I read through this entire program myself, right down to Anthropic’s official Terms & Conditions. So in this blog you’ll get the full truth with no hype and no lies — it’s real, but it’s not for everyone. Read to the end, because there’s a “catch” most reels hide.
The two-line answer: Yes, it’s real. Anthropic’s “Claude for Open Source” program gives 6 months of Claude Max 20x ($1,200 value) for free — but only to open-source developers who meet the eligibility criteria. It is not a “free Claude” scheme for regular students or new users.
What Is the “Claude for Open Source” Program?
Anthropic (the company behind Claude AI) launched a program in February 2026 called Claude for Open Source. Its purpose is simple — to give free AI tools as a thank-you to developers who build and maintain open-source software (libraries, tools, frameworks) for free.
They get a 6-month Claude Max 20x subscription, completely free. This is Anthropic’s top individual plan, normally priced at $200 per month. That means 6 × $200 = $1,200 (about ₹1 lakh) in value, for zero rupees.
What Do You Actually Get With Claude Max 20x?
This is important to understand, because “20x” doesn’t mean a different or better model. “20x” means 20 times the usage limit of the Pro plan. In other words, Claude won’t stop you for a long time.
- Claude Code — an AI coding agent in your terminal/VS Code that reads your entire codebase and makes changes itself.
- Long conversations and big refactoring tasks without hitting “limit reached”.
- Access to new features and premium tools.
The real benefit is that big tasks — PR reviews, code refactoring, documentation, bug fixing — get done in a single session without interruptions. For heavy coders, it’s genuinely useful.
Who Can Apply? (This Is the Real Catch)
This program is not for everyone. To apply, you need to meet at least one of the two “tracks” below:

Beyond these two, there are also some general rules:
- You’re a real person (not a company/org) and 18 years or older.
- You live in a country where Claude.ai is available and aren’t covered by US sanctions/export restrictions.
- Your GitHub account is in good standing.
- You’re not an Anthropic employee/contractor or their family member.
“Is Claude Code free for Indian students?”
This is the most searched question on Google — so, honestly: No. Being a student alone doesn’t make you eligible. This program is based on open-source contribution, not student status. That said, if you’re a student who maintains a qualifying open-source project, you can apply. (Claude has a separate free tier and Pro plans for students — that’s a different matter.)
How to Apply (Step by Step)
- Go to the official form: claude.com/contact-sales/claude-for-oss (this is the correct link — don’t enter your credentials on any third-party “free Claude” link).
- Fill in your first name, last name and email. If you already have an Anthropic account, use the same email.
- Enter your primary GitHub handle and repository URL (the project you’re applying with).
- If you’re on the Ecosystem Impact Track, explain in under 500 words in “Other info” why the project matters.
- Submit. Reviews happen on a rolling basis — apply early, because there are only 10,000 spots.
- Once approved, you’ll get a unique activation link by email. You must activate it within the time given in the email (currently 90 days), or it will expire.
Ecosystem Track Application Tip
If your project doesn’t have many stars, don’t focus on vanity metrics (just stars) in your 500 words. Explain how many other projects depend on yours, who uses it, and what would break if it disappeared. Show real ecosystem impact, not hype.
The “Catch” Reels Don’t Tell You (Honest Fine Print)
This section is the most important, because the word “free” hides a lot:
- Limited spots: There is no fixed deadline right now, but the program is capped at up to 10,000 approved recipients, so applying early is still smart.
- Only 6 months: After the benefit period, the subscription expires. If you already had a paid plan, it’s paused and automatically resumes after 6 months. If you had a free account, you go back to free — you won’t be charged automatically unless you choose to subscribe.
- Overages may be charged separately: The base plan is free, but if you exceed the overage limit, standard pricing applies. If you accidentally set an API key, billing goes to your API key — not the grant.
- One person = one subscription: Duplicate applications are ignored. Account sharing, reselling or transferring is prohibited — if caught, the subscription is terminated immediately.
- Fake metrics = ban: Bought stars, star-for-star exchanges or fake contributions lead to disqualification. Providing false information also gets it revoked.
- No guarantee of approval: Meeting the criteria doesn’t guarantee approval — the final decision is Anthropic’s.
What If You’re Not Eligible?
Many people won’t be eligible, and that’s completely fine. You have these real options (without any fake “crack”):
- Use Claude’s free tier — it’s enough for basic work.
- If you code seriously, Claude Pro ($20/month) offers great value — not everyone needs Max 20x.
- The real long-term move: start contributing to open source. It’s not just for this program — it benefits your developer profile, learning and job opportunities. You may become eligible next year or for the next program.
How to Make the Most of the 6 Months
If you get approved, don’t waste these 6 months just because “it’s free”:
- Review PRs and issues on your open-source project faster with Claude Code.
- Get that big legacy-code refactor and documentation done that you’ve been putting off.
- Decide whether paying for Max 20x after 6 months is worth it — based on real data, not speculation.
FAQ — What Everyone Is Asking
Is it really free, or do I need a credit card?
The base subscription is free, with no automatic renewal. You’re only charged for overages or anything extra you choose to buy.
Can a new developer (beginner) apply?
Only if you’re a maintainer/core member of a qualifying repo or run an ecosystem-critical project. A beginner who’s just learning is generally not eligible.
Can you apply from India?
Yes, as long as you meet the eligibility (maintainer/ecosystem) and general rules, and Claude.ai is available in India. The main factor is open-source contribution, not your country.
How long does approval take?
Reviews are rolling — some people get an email within a week. Applying early is better.
Will I be charged after 6 months?
No, not automatically. A free account goes back to free; if you were already paying, your old plan resumes. You can cancel if you want.
